Water softener pellets are typically made from salt (sodium chloride) and are used in a water softener to remove hard water minerals, resulting in soft water.
The pellets are made from small salt granules that are compacted together to form a large pellet (pillow-shaped form), The larger size of the pellets may make them less susceptible to bridging, or clumping together in a water softener unit, compared to smaller salt crystals.
Other types of water softener pellets include, potassium chloride - a low-sodium alternative, and iron fighter pellets - formulated for use where iron content in water is high - helping prevent rust stains on household fixtures.

Water softeners transform hard water into soft water using the ion exchange process
