Water softeners transform hard water into soft water. The softener removes hard water minerals, like calcium and magnesium, through a process called ion exchange. This video shows how salt plays a role in the ion exchange process.
Water softener pellets are typically made from salt (sodium chloride) and are used in a water softener to remove hard water minerals, resulting in soft water.
