Water softener salt is most commonly made of sodium chloride. But, although water softener salt is safe to use in a water softener, it should not be used for food or animal consumption.
If water softener salt should happen to be consumed, it may cause a stomachache if a large quantity was ingested. As long as there is access to plenty of drinking water, it's unlikely other issues will arise.
Consult a physician or veterinarian if there are questions or concerns.
For food applications, we recommend Diamond Crystal Kosher salt.

There are a variety of kosher salts in the market. We compare Diamond Crystal Kosher salt with a competitor's, compacted flake salt. They differ in regards to adherence, solubility, bulk density, additives, seasoning control, and sodium levels. With the right kosher salt and a few cooking tips, one can create healthier menus - without sacrificing flavor.
Chefs and cookbook authors use kosher salt for a variety of reasons. But not all kosher salt is created equal. Diamond Crystal® Kosher salt is authentic kosher salt for its simplicity, purity and coarse texture.
