What is the difference between a water softener and a water conditioner?

Typically, a water softener uses salt in an ion exchange process to remove hard water minerals from the water, resulting in soft water.

Water conditioners, which are typically salt-free, reduce the tendency of the water to form scale, but they do not make water soft.

The benefits of soft water include:

  • Helping keep water fixtures free of hard water stains
  • More efficiently running water heaters, saving money on utility bills
  • Pipes less likely to have scale build-up, extending the life of your appliances
