Water softeners can help preserve the efficiency of household appliances

Water softeners play an important factor in helping preserve the efficiency of other water-using appliances. Without a softener, appliances that are meant to be environmentally friendly many not perform as expected.

High-efficiency water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers are designed to run on soft water.  Scale build up from hard water minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, force appliances to work harder and longer.  For example, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) found scaling and sediment from hard water reduces water heater efficiency by 10%*
