What is water softener salt made of?

Water softener salt is most commonly made of sodium chloride (NaCl). It is similar to the salt used for cooking. It may also be made with a salt alternative called potassium chloride (KCl), but this is less common.

Water softener salt comes in different forms as well.

Water Softener Salt Pellets Diamond Crystal® has two products in pellet form:

Bright and Soft® Salt Pellets (yellow bag)

Iron Fighter® Salt Pellets (green bag)

Both are high purity salts that contain a small amount of additional ingredients to help prevent caking and mushing inside of the salt tank.

The Iron Fighter® product contains an additive that helps reduce rust stains on laundry, fixtures, sinks and tubs.

Salt Crystals Other Diamond Crystal®   products come in crystal form:

Solar Naturals® Salt Crystals (blue bag)

SunGems® Salt Crystals (yellow bag)

Both contain sodium chloride with no additives.

Diamond Crystal® Potassium Chloride Salt Alternative (purple bag) is made from potassium chloride (KCl) with no additives.
