5 Simple Ways to Reduce Sodium

Looking for a simple way to eat the foods you love without adding more sodium to your diet? Take a few tips from professional chefs and knowledgeable home cooks for managing sodium.

  1. Use fresh meats, as fresh cuts of beef, chicken or pork only contain natural sodium. Lower your sodium by selecting fresh fruits and vegetables as well.
  2. Select spices or seasonings that do not list sodium on their labels; for example choose garlic powder over garlic salt.
  3. Begin reading food labels. Sodium content is always listed on the label.
  4. Bring out the natural sweetness in vegetable dishes by roasting or grilling them.
  5. Switch from granulated salt to kosher salt, because the light flakes are fragile enough to crush between your fingers for precise seasoning control.
